Latest update| Wang Quanzhang eventually reunited with his family in Beijing (25-28 Apr 2020)

Chinese human rights lawyer Wang Quanzhang finally reunited with his wife Li Wenzu and son Quanquan in Beijing on Monday evening, 27 April, after police escorted him to the capital from Jinan, Shandong province. He was held under 14 days of quarantine after his release from prison on 5 April 2020.

On 26 April, Li Wenzu was sent to the hospital due to severe abdominal pain and vomiting, and was diagnosed with acute appendicitis. Wang Quanzhang called a cab to return to Beijing when he got the news, but was intercepted by state security agents on the way and taken to the police station. Wang was later released and sent back to his home in Jinan on the same day. Li Wenzu was sent back home in the company of Wang Qiaoling at midnight.

On Monday, 27 April, Li Wenzu - who still has abdominal pain - went for a medical treatment at a hospital in the community at 11am. At 11.20am, Wang Quanzhang talked to Li Wenzu on Wechat phone, saying that the police were about to drive him back to Beijing. Upon arrival in Beijing, he was first sent to the police station before going home. Several premises officers, police and district staff followed him and tried to get inside Wang’s home. Li Wenzu insisted to keep them out.

However, questions remain over whether the authorities will guarantee Wang’s freedom of movement in Beijing and stop all forms of surveillance and harassment to the family. We urge the international community to keep a close eye on the situation. The Chinese government should comply with Article 37 of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China, and with Articles 3, 12 and 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to respect the personal freedom of Wang Quanzhang after his release, and to cease and desist from imposing any form of house arrest, surveillance or restriction on his personal freedoms.
