A CHRLCG Statement to Condemn the Chinese authorities’ illegal attempts to interrupt Li Wenzu’s expedition in search of her husband and the extra-judicial detention of citizens

(10 April 2018, Hong Kong)  Lawyer Wang Quanzhang has been enforced disappeared for over 1,000 days since the 709 Crackdown.  This has prompted his wife, Li Wenzu, to embark on an expedition with the other family members of the Crackdown to look for her husband.  They intended to march from Beijing to the Second Intermediate People’s Court in Tianjin to launch their protest, urging the Chinese government to immediately release Wang Quanzhang. However, since the fifth day, 8 April, 2018, of their journey, they have been followed by unidentified vehicles.  On 9 April, 2018, public security officers turned up and forcibly held them with extra-legal means. Li and the others were temporarily uncontactable. The authorities have by far provided no clear explanation of any kind for their deeds.

The China Human Rights Lawyers Concern Group (CHRLCG) strongly condemns the authorities’ illegal acts, and demands the Chinese government to stop suppressing human rights lawyers and their family members.

Article 35 of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China (the Constitution) provides that citizens of the People’s Republic of China shall enjoy freedoms of speech, of assembly, of association and of demonstration. The authorities’ manoeuvres were obviously intended to thwart Li’s march, which in effect have infringed upon her freedom of expression.  Furthermore, article 37 of the Constitution stipulates that freedom of the person of citizens of the People’s Republic of China is inviolable. The illegal detention of Li and her supporters in the police station, among whom, a citizen named Jia Gang was held for over 10 hours, is clearly an infringement of their constitutional rights.  It is evidenced that the Chinese authorities have shown no regard for the Constitution.

The CHRLCG hereby calls on the Chinese government to immediately stop all repression on the human rights lawyers as well as their family members, and respect the fundamental rights of the Chinese citizens as it pledged.

Even if the authorities succeed in stopping Li Wenzu from her expedition in search of her husband, people will still be able to hear her sad but bright voice wailing:  Wang Quanzhang has been unjustly detained for a 1000 days! Release him immediately if there is not a trial now! It is perturbing to note that the Communist China under Xi Jinping’s rule has become a shameless one that suppress its own people.
