“709 Crackdown” Lawyers’ Case Update*

*Note: Wang Yu and Bao Longjun was taken away on 9 July, the large scale nation-wide interviews of the lawyers began on 10 July, and thus it is also known as the “710 Crackdown”.  

 

Weekly Update:

  • Lawyer Bao Longjun包龍軍律師: Someone claiming to be from the Tianjin Public Security Bureay called the defense lawyer of Bao and said that they have received the legal supervision letter from the the Tianjin Procuratorate, they would like to ask the lawyers for the relevant information, including: the date in which the letter was sent by the lawyers, if the lawyers knew about the specific department handling the case, if the lawyers knew that the case is under the jurisdiction of the Tianjin Police, is Bao related to the current case, and whether he is a staff of the Fengrui Law Firm, if the police has contacted the family and if the compulsory criminal measures etc.
  • Lawyer Wang Quanzhang王全璋律師: (1) His defense lawyers were informed that the compulsory criminal measure was changed from criminal detention to residential surveillance at a designated location. (2) His defense lawyers submitted a written application letter to the investigation team leader Zhao Xu asking to meet with Wang, to get the relevant information of the case, to meet with the person-in-charge of Wang’s case and to send letters to Wang. Zhao said he is not the person-in-charge of the case, he is only the receptionist and to convey the lawyers’ message and applications to the relevant staff.
  • Lawyer Li Chunfu李春富律師: His defense lawyers requested the following from the police: (1) name of person-in-charge of the case, his contact details; (2) what compulsory criminal measures was taken, if the family was notified, in what format were they notified and the proof of the notification; (3) the alleged offense and the facts that are already confirmed. The lawyers also complained about the points of illegality of the investigation.
  • Gao Yue (Li Heping’s assistant) 高月(李和平助理): (1) because the investigation body refused to tell the lawyers about the person-in-charge of the case, the case facts, to let them send letters to Gao, the defense lawyers went to Hexi Branch to ask for these rights but was refused by the police; (2) the lawyers went to the Tianjin Hexi Branch Procuratorate to complain about the illegal acts of the police and ask for the procuratorate’s supervision, they requested to have the rights to send letters to Gao. They were informed verbally that “the acts of the Public Security Bureau are not illegal, because the case is related to state secrets, thus no communication is allowed.” (Note: This happened last week, but the lawyers released the information this week)
